Facing History and Ourselves: Awareness Ad

Changing the narrative of talking politics at the dinner table.

Facing History and Ourselves equips teachers and students to address today’s difficult issues through the lens of history and empowers young people to stand up against racism, antisemitism, and prejudice. When the organization had the opportunity to take out a full-page ad in the New York Times to offer advice to families, pre-Thanksgiving, about having difficult conversations in the wake of a divisive election, the team looked to Rmrkbl to design the ad for its campaign: “We Need To Talk.”

Designing a conversation starter.

Facing History aimed to use the full-page ad as an opportunity to explain how to talk – and listen – with civility and respect. These skills are vital to the health of civil society and the future of democracy and are central to Facing History’s model. With the New York Times deadline coming up, Facing History approached Rmrkbl to design a bold full-page ad to be published in the Thanksgiving Day issue.

The results.

The ad impacted Facing History’s important work by allowing the organization to become part of the cultural conversation and by helping families discuss difficult topics. It received a positive response for its eye-catching design and it joined families at the dinner table.
